August 13 marks a significant day in my life that forever altered my journey. On this day in 2001, I came home to find my beloved husband, Paul, had passed away in his chair. Initially, I thought he was asleep, and I tried to wake him. Those initial moments of realization were a blur of confusion and heartbreak. The month of August has since become a period of reflection and remembrance, a time when memories of love and loss intertwine.
Paul's passing was not just a personal loss but a public event that captured the attention of the community, leaving me with little space to grieve privately. I have walked this path of widowhood for 23 years, learning to navigate the profound emptiness and societal expectations that follow such a loss.
I've discovered that grief is not something you ever truly move on from; instead, it becomes a part of your story. Through the years, I've counseled many women on the difficult journey of widowhood, offering support and guidance in what I call "Widowhood 101." This journey requires courage, patience, and self-compassion but can lead to profound growth and transformation.

My photos focus on my neighborhood and garden flowers. Many flowers are at their peak and are just gorgeous. My zinnias are out of control.

The Yellow Butterfly: A Symbol of Love and Connection
Shortly after Paul's passing, I noticed yellow butterflies everywhere. From the day after he died, they appeared in the most unexpected places—even through a doctor’s office window. As many know, August is a big butterfly month here, but their presence felt uncanny.
A year later, I traveled to Sedona with a friend who was an empath and medium. She looked at me one day and said, “Paul gives you butterflies.” At the time, I didn’t quite understand. I had planted gardens to attract pollinators, yet the idea didn’t resonate. I received a butterfly lapel pin as part of a grief therapy program from which I graduated. Butterflies seemed to appear everywhere.
Weeks later, while going through some clothes, I found the first gift Paul ever gave me: a silk scarf adorned with butterflies from the Smithsonian. This discovery felt like another gentle nudge from him. Each August, without fail, a giant yellow butterfly visits me, fluttering around for several days. He appeared just last week.
This yearly visitor always feels like Paul’s, reminding me of our enduring love. It’s a comforting symbol that he is still with me, transcending the physical realm. Only the body dies; the soul and our love live on forever.
Step 4: Creating an Action Plan for Achieving Your Goals
As part of our reinvention series, we now focus on creating an action plan. This step transforms your dreams and goals into actionable tasks, structuring them into daily, monthly, and yearly objectives. Start by establishing clear goals, understanding your goals, and aligning them with your personal beliefs and values. Whether incorporating fitness routines, spending more time with family, or learning something new, each goal should resonate deeply with what matters most to you. Set priorities for your well-being, manage commitments, and develop a concrete plan with daily actions, monthly milestones, and annual objectives. Review and adjust your strategy to align with your evolving goals and values. Remember, a successful reinvention plan adapts with you, supporting your journey.
Travel: Exploring the World with Confidence and Safety
Traveling abroad can be an enriching and empowering experience, especially for women. While planning your next adventure, it's essential to prioritize safety and prepare thoroughly. Research your destination's culture, laws, and customs, and stay connected with loved ones. Secure your documents, manage your finances wisely, and prioritize health by packing necessary medications and understanding the local healthcare system. Stay in safe accommodations, blend in with the locals, and trust your instincts. If you lose your passport, report it immediately and contact your embassy for assistance. By following these tips, you can navigate foreign environments safely and confidently, ensuring your travels are enjoyable and secure.
Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the flavors of ripe tomatoes, and what better way than with a classic Southern Tomato Pie? This delicious dish combines juicy tomatoes, crispy bacon, and a blend of cheeses and herbs baked in a flaky pie crust. Start by slicing the tomatoes and letting them drain on paper towels to remove excess moisture. Layer the pie with a mixture of mozzarella, cheddar, and Parmesan cheeses seasoned with fresh basil and oregano. Bake until golden and bubbly and enjoy a slice of summer with each bite.

My Guardian Angel, Genoa Italy photo by Mary Harvey Gurley Twelve Years Sober: The Truth No One Wants to Hear Twelve years ago today, I hit rock bottom. Not the kind of "rock bottom" that comes with a warning label or some dramatic movie moment where you suddenly realize it’s time to change. No, mine was a slow, painful unraveling until one day—February 4th—I found myself with no more excuses. No more rationalizing. No more pretending I was in control. If I hadn’t hit bottom that day, I’d be...
