Reinventing Yourself Can Be Overwhelming, But It's Worth It

A Full Plate: Managing Overcommitment in Your Professional and Personal Life

Life has a way of accumulating responsibilities; sometimes, they're more than we bargained for. I found myself in the throes of being overwhelmed, juggling the exciting yet time-consuming tasks of a new client, ActionLogics, with my own ventures that were constantly in need of attention.

New Challenges: New Challenges: Merging Corporate Expertise with Startup Agility

In March, I plunged into the world of start-ups and business redirection, drawing on my corporate experience to build a go-to-market strategy for ActionLogics. Shannon Brown, a favorite boss from my FedEx days and now CEO, brought me on board to steer the company's rebranding efforts. This has meant setting aside some of my projects to prioritize the company's needs. It’s exhilarating, fun, and overwhelming.

New Challenges: Merging Corporate Expertise with Startup Agility

While rebranding ActionLogics, my business began to echo the need for attention. The launch of my website, an endeavor close to my heart, called for the same level of dedication I was giving to my clients. It became clear that my tendency to put others first was again at the forefront, leaving my own aspirations waiting in the wings. Sorry to all of you for the newsletter schedule, but I will get it more regularly.

Balancing Acts Beyond Business: Maintaining Wellness Amid Responsibilities

Business isn't the sole contributor to the sensation of being overwhelmed. As the HOA president, I'm preparing for the annual meeting, addressing the influx of springtime issues. My weekends at my cousin's landscape nursery are a bright spot in my week. It’s my only real social interaction, and I love it. I am also caring for a friend facing health challenges, and it’s been equally rewarding and demanding. I look around my home and garden and wonder how I will get everything done and ready for summer.

Introspection and Setting Limits: Embracing Passions While Maintaining Boundaries

While I encourage others, especially women forging new paths, to follow their passions, I've realized that unchecked enthusiasm can lead to overextending yourself. The trick lies in intentional living—choosing what aligns with my goals and saying no to what doesn't.

Your Thoughts: Shared Experiences, Seeking Balance Together

I'm not alone in feeling stretched thin by the things I love. Many of us face the push and pull of various roles and responsibilities. That's why setting boundaries and practicing self-care are not just advice but necessities.

Inviting Community Insight

I'm curious about how others manage the weight of their commitments. What tactics have you found beneficial in staying focused on what matters most?

As I navigate this busy season for my business and myself, I am reminded that taking things one step at a time is okay. By sharing our stories, we can all grow and learn how to balance better, care for ourselves, and move forward purposefully.

Remember, reinvention is a journey, not a destination. It's okay to take things one step at a time and adjust course as needed. The most important thing is to stay true to yourself and your values, and to keep moving forward with courage and compassion. Now, do I go to the gym or take a nap?

What is overwhelming you today? Let Talk.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Contact me at mary@maryharveygurley.com. Also, join our private Facebook community.

Wishing you all the best on your reinvention journey,

LeAnne Kleinmann’s Substack Article Featuring My Reinvention Story

LeAnne is one of the most talented journalists in Memphis. She has a fabulous weekly blog entitled “Telling My Age.” I encourage you to read the article and subscribe to her SubStack account so you can read about aging from her perspective. Her writing is worth your time.

The article also features my story of reinvention after taking a buyout from my corporate job at age 60. Despite the obstacles, I refused to let my age define me and embarked on a journey of self-discovery, pursuing my passions, and sharing my experiences to inspire others. LeAnne tells a better story about me than I can. Thanks, LeAnne.

My story is just one example of the challenges and opportunities that come with reinvention. As I've learned, while the process can be daunting, it's also a chance to redefine ourselves and make a meaningful impact. Women in their later years have the potential to offer new ideas, build businesses, and create positive change.
